laughter yoga
Laughter Yoga is a deceptively simple but powerful form of exercise available to anyone, anytime, wherever they are: no gym, no equipment, no big learning curve!
Laughter Yoga was created in 1995 by Dr. Madan Kataria, a family physician in India looking for an effective, alternative way of treating his patients, many of whom were suffering with mental issues and illness related to stress. The premise is that the body can laugh – and reap the benefits of laughter – regardless of what the mind has to say. It requires no jokes, no comedy, no sense of humour, you don’t even need to be happy; Laughter Yoga invites everyone to assume responsibility for their own ability to laugh and benefit. Happiness becomes a choice.
It is now understood that laughter can play a role in healing, staying healthy, coping with stress, and finding emotional balance. What are some of the benefits of laughter to body and mind? The ‘internal jog’ of hearty laughter ...
* boosts the immune system
* decreases blood pressure
* relieves muscular tension and mental stress
* provides an aerobic whole-body exercise
* improves breathing
* stimulates internal organs
* oxygenates blood and brain, making one feel alert and energized
* releases feelings of anger, fear, boredom, and distress
* helps dispel loneliness and alienation
* improves communication
* lifts the spirit and inspires hope and optimism
